Study Reveals Cleaning Products and Asthma Rates Go Hand in Hand

New Zealand has one of the worst rates of asthma and respiratory disease in the developed world – with over 700,000 Kiwis affected. Unfortunately, it’s not just adults impacted, according to the latest stats, hospitalisation rates in children under 15 years are nearly three times the rate of adults aged 30 – 64.

 asthma and respiratory disease

Globally, asthma is the most common chronic disease among children, but poor housing and lifestyle choices that are not the only reasons numbers remain high.  According to a first-of-its-kind human study conducted by Norwegian researchers at the University of Bergen – and published in the Journal of Alleger and Clinical Immunology, the risk of children developing asthma, and other respiratory conditions increases up to 71 percent if their mothers are exposed – or have been exposed – to significant quantities of cleaning products and disinfectants in the workplace – pre-conception and during pregnancy, exposure included the respiratory risks.

Reducing the respiratory risks

In Aotearoa, our key growth industries include education, consultancy, food and beverage, and biotechnology, as listed by the NZTE. New Zealand’s labor statistics by industry clearly show that women are predominantly employed in the service sector – as sighted in Identifying Emerging Industries report, led by an AUT Gender and Diversity Research Group.

So, ensuring we as a leading cleaning provider prioritise greener health measures at the frontline of our workforce – across all staff and franchisees – to reduce harmful exposure events and promote healthier environments, is more important than ever before.

Healthier measures for the long-term

As the Norwegian study reveals, and as uncovered in the data its researchers examined across two international respiratory studies – Respiratory Health in Northern Europe [RHINE] and Respiratory Health in Northern Europe, Spain, and Australia [RHINESSA] – it’s well established that workers who are directly exposed to cleaning products and disinfectants are not only at risk of developing respiratory symptoms and asthma in the short-term but also suffering long-term ill health.

As advocates for improved health outcomes, our Sensitive Choice accredited cleaning solutions are focussed on helping people who suffer from, or are at risk of, developing respiratory and skin conditions, to live full and supported lives.

Respiratory conditions can be life-threatening if not managed well – 77 Kiwis die from asthma each year – so every measure to stem the flow of this growing crisis requires action.

Our engagement in eco-conscious products and sustainable cleaning keeps us connected to what matters most – people and health.
